Local farmers will sell Stevia in the Chinese market after Kenya and China signed an agreement allowing for export of various agricultural products.

The two countries signed an agreement on food, plant and animal safety — known as sanitary and phytosanitary measures — paving the way for Kenya to start exporting a selection of fruit and vegetables, flowers and meat to China.

A statement from the Trade ministry yesterday said the signing of the protocol unlocks the way for Kenya’s Stevia (natural sweetener) exports to China.

“Stevia has a huge demand in the Chinese market as it is an alternative to table sugar and carries considerable health benefits to people suffering from diabetes,” said the statement.

China has become Kenya’s biggest trading partner, accounting for 17 percent of the Kenya’s annual trade by value or more than Sh400 billion, heavily tilted in China’s favour.

Principal Secretary in the State Department of Trade Chris Kiptoo led the Kenya delegation that signed the deal in Beijing.
