A former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner is on the spot for spending Sh1.7 million taxpayers money to attend leadership training in London that had no relation with the electoral body’s work.

The IEBC fully funded the four-day training of Margaret Mwachanya at London Graduate School in April just 12 days before she and her two counterparts resigned from the agency.

Ms Mwachanya was at pains to explain to the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee why the IEBC fully paid for her trip including allowances for four days and air ticket.

The former commissioner shocked the MPs when she admitted that she could not remember the name of the university that awarded her an honorary doctorate degree.

“Are you telling this committee that you cannot remember the name of the university that gave you an honorary doctorate degree after four days in April yet you can remember the name of the university where you got your first degree,” asked Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.
