A court has issued a warrant of arrest against former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo for failing to pay Sh25 million owed to Nairobi businessman Bryan Yongo.

The arrest will be effected by the Muthangari Police Station OCS, the warrant says.

High Court Deputy Registrar Elizabeth Tanui said the show cause notice against Mr Jirongo had been in force for a considerable time because the former legislator had made some proposals to settle the claim.

However, he has not yet done so, and his proposals to Mr Yongo have not borne fruit.

“It is time the court stamped its authority. Previously, Mr Jirongo has been summoned to appear before court to give reasons why he had issued bad cheques to the decree holder but he failed to do so,” the deputy registrar said.

Ms Tanui issued the warrant of arrest so that Mr Jirongo is brought to court to explain why he should not be committed to civil jail. Last year, Mr Jirongo was declared bankrupt for failing to pay Sh700million debt owed some eight companies associated with businessman Sammy Boit arap Kogo.

The National Bank auctioned properties registered under the name of eight companies belonging to Mr Kogo after Mr Jirongo failed to pay Sh700million bank loan advanced to him with the properties used as security.

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary-general Francis Atwoli is also embroiled in a legal tussle with politician Cyrus Jirongo over a Sh100 million debt.

Mr Atwoli advanced a friendly loan to the tune of Sh100 million which was payable within 50 days at an interest of Sh10 million based on an agreement made on August 10, 2016.
