Mombasa residents could be required to pay for garbage collection.

Governor Ali Joho said the county could ask residents to pay “something small” for the county to collect garbage efficiently. However, he did not state how much the residents will be required to pay.

“The service is offered free by the county government but because of the magnitude, we know the figures that are required to efficiently and effectively collect garbage in Mombasa, you may be required to pay,” Mr Joho said during the launch of the county’s pest control programme at the Public Health Department in Mwembe Tayari.

“Help us manage garbage from your house. Don’t just dump garbage anywhere. We have information of private companies that dump garbage on roads at night, soon we will enforce bylaws to control the menace,” he added.

“There are 30 to 40 companies that use vehicles such as lorries to collect garbage from households but they dump it everywhere in a manner that is not allowed by county laws. We will deal with them, they are irresponsible.”
