The Judiciary is set to digitise court files from July 1. Chief Justice David Maraga said the electronic system will be available in Nairobi before being rolled countrywide.

Speaking during a meeting with lawyers at the Mombasa Law Courts, Mr Maraga said that the menace of missing files will be a thing of the past once all court records are digitised.

“I am determined to digitise records, the electronic files will be alongside manual ones,” said Mr Maraga.

He said that Kenya is one of the few countries in Africa which have not started digitising court records.

Mr Maraga told the lawyers that construction of new court buildings, Justice Tower, will start next month. He said that there is need to establish courts in Chagamwe and Likoni and expand Shanzu in order to ease pressure on the main court on Mombasa island.

Mr Maraga said the Judiciary was working hard to ensure that all election related cases, especially those relating to the Political Parties Tribunal, are concluded by July 5.

He said the cases should be concluded to enable political parties to give the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission a list of candidates for printing on ballot papers.
