No victim of human-wildlife conflict has been compensated for either loss of life or property damage since 2013, a government audit shows.

As a result, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) owes victims Sh2.2 billion in unpaid compensation claims for the year 2014 to 2016 alone. Out of the Sh2.2 billion claims, 2,029 cases of human injury accounts for Sh990,188,000 while Sh1,245,200,000 is required to compensate for the death of 274 people.

“Interviews with assistant directors revealed that nobody has of yet been compensated for either loss of life or property since 2013,” Auditor General Edward Ouko says in a performance audit report on the effectiveness of measures put in place by the KWS in protecting wildlife.

The report tabled in Parliament on October 23, awaits scrutiny by Kareke Mbiuki-chaired Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

Mr Ouko said the number of injuries resulting from human-wildlife conflict increased from 913 cases in 2012 to 1,496 in 2014.

In 2013, there were 199 deaths reported and 1,409 injuries while in 2,014, 170 deaths occurred and 1m496 injuries reported to the KWS.
