Government officials say they will plant the national flag on Migingo island despite resistance from Ugandan authorities, and even as tension between the sides cool.

Migori County police commander Joseph Nthenge said officials are still working on ways to hoist the flag on the Lake Victoria island.

“It is not a matter of if but when our flag will fly on Migingo,” he said on Tuesday.

The police boss told Kenyan fishermen and traders not to despair. “The government has not abandoned you. We are addressing emerging issues to make sure you carry out your business in a conducive environment,” he said in Migori town. The police boss, however, did not give details on what officials are doing, only saying the issues are sensitive.

Mr Nthenge spoke as tension reduced on the island in the wake of heavy deployment by the Ugandan government.

Kenyan fishermen from Mugabo, Nyandiwa and Muhuru avoided the island for almost a week.
