Kuwait has lifted the seven-week ban on Kenya’s meat after compliance with health standards at export processing facilities, offering relief to abattoirs like Kenya Meat Commission.
Kenya lost the market on November 8 after the Middle East nation cited a failure to maintain high sanitary conditions at its export processing facilities, leading to supply of meat with high drug residue level.
Kenya is estimated to export thousands of tonnes of meat to Kuwait annually, and a ban was feared could lead other nations to restrict export of local beef.
“Due to stringent sanitary measures that have been placed in the animal supply chain..., the ban which was placed on Kenya’s export to Kuwait on November 8 has been lifted,” said Livestock principal secretary Harry Kimtai in a statement Thursday. The Middle East is a prime market for small stock products while corned beef is more popular in Africa and Saudi Arabia.
