Mr Daddy Awiti was charged with two offences of conspiring to defraud and obtaining goods by false pretence when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku.
He is accused of willfully and unlawfully obtaining 2,800 HP laptops valued at Sh180 million between July 1 and August 12 this year.
The court was told that he pretended that he was carrying out a genuine tender business and that he was able to deliver the said items.

Mr Daddy Awiti was charged with two offences of conspiring to defraud and obtaining goods by false pretence when he appeared before Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku.
He is accused of willfully and unlawfully obtaining 2,800 HP laptops valued at Sh180 million between July 1 and August 12 this year.
The court was told that he pretended that he was carrying out a genuine tender business and that he was able to deliver the said items.
“Jointly with others not before court, the accused with intet to defraud offered tender documents under the name of the office of the Deputy President while pretending that they were genuine,” the prosecution told court.
The said laptops are listed as property of Makidu Motors Limited, which is situated on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
According to th Director of Criminal Investigations Directorate George Kinoti, the suspects are said to have been fraudulently using the office of the deputy president to obtain the gadgets from various organisations and individuals.
Mr Awiti is among seven suspects who were arrested in Nairobi’s Westlands with more than 700 laptops.
Other four suspects believed to be behind the spate of laptops theft from unsuspecting people attending meetings and conferences in the city were also arraigned in court last week.
The four are; Isaiah Aluodo Belek, 33, Amisi Erick Joseph, 39, George Mwangi Maina, 30, and Kevin Njagi Kariuki 22. Fifteen laptops were recovered from them.
The arrest and prosecution of these men came after police in the city uncovered a theft syndicate in Nairobi where suspects steal laptops and then sell them as refurbished items at different shops.
Detectives reportedly raided one of the shops and police called upon members of the public who may have lost laptops within the city in the recent past to visit Parklands police station to establish whether their gadgets could be among those recovered.
The court said Mr Awiti could be set free if he pays Sh3million as cash bail or Sh5 million as bond after he denied the two charges.
