Migori county government workers have issued a fresh strike notice over their unpaid salary arrears amounting to Sh135 million.

The Kenya county government workers union Migori branch is accusing the county administration of violating a return- to-work agreement they signed on December 21 last year.

The 1,600 workers want to be paid Sh135 million that was accrued during the regime of the defunct local authorities.

They downed tools last December but only resumed duty after they were promised payments in phases.

“That despite the fact that we fully performed our part of contract last year by suspending the industrial action forthwith and allowing our members to resume work immediately, you consequently failed, refused and or ignored to perform your part of contract as agreed thus breaching the express terms of the said contract,” said part of the strike notice signed by the union chairman Charles Opiyo and secretary Mr Baraza Nguka.

“Be advised that should you fail to comply with our demands within the next 14 days, we shall, without any further notice to you, resort to an industrial action in accordance with the Labour Laws,” the letter added.

“We are psychologically prepared to down tools and no amount of intimidation will make us change our minds,” Mr Nguka told journalists.

During the last December strike which lasted three weeks, county administration lost over Sh50 million in uncollected revenue.

Many estates choked with garbage since cleaners were part of the strike. But the county administration asked the workers to be patient “since the matter was already being addressed at higher level”.

“ We hope to reach an agreement with them before  the strike begins…this is not the right time (politically speaking) for such industrial action,” said a source  in the Governor’s office who preferred to remain anonymous. Apart from the dues, the workers are also complaining about delayed promotions and failure to employ casual workers who were hired seven years ago.
