More than 10,000 teachers will be employed in readiness for the free day secondary education rollout.
Education secretary Fred Matiang’i said the Sh23.5 billion allocated in the supplementary budget for Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) starting January does not include money for hiring teachers.
He said the ministry requires an annual budget of Sh46.2 billion to fully implement the FDSE.
The Sh23.5 billion will be used to buy materials like pens, exercise books and management of internal exams. About Sh1.4 billion will be used for school infrastructure.
Dr Matiangi said every student will be allocated Sh22,844, completely eliminating tuition fees.
“No parent will pay tuition fees for students in day secondary schools,” he added.
He said the ministry will publish lower fees for boarding schools before the end of the term.
He told MPs that the ministry is working to ensure that the country attains free and compulsory education from primary to secondary level.
