The search and rescue mission for passengers of a Fly-SAX managed light aircraft that vanished on Tuesday evening with 10 people on board has been suspended.

Fly-SAX chief executive George Kivindyo said on Wednesday the search for the plane, its crew and passengers was called off due to bad weather in the Aberdare forest.

The exercise by a team comprising security officials, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Red Cross, National Disaster Management and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) personnel is set to resume on Thursday.

“Further to the Press statement released yesterday, the aerial search and rescue team had resumed and was dispatched early morning to continue with the search efforts.

“We however wish to inform you that the prevailing weather conditions are presenting a challenge to the rescue process. We will resume tomorrow,” said Mr Kivindyo.

The Cesna C208 craft, registration number 5Y-CAF, on route from Kitale lost contact with the control tower at 5pm on Tuesday in the Aberdares, 60 kilometres from its destination, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

It left Kitale shortly after 4pm with two female crew and eight passengers on board and was expected in Nairobi about an hour later.

Fly-SAX, a subsidiary of Fly540, said in a statement that the plane was last seen on the radar at 5:20pm, the time it was expected to land at JKIA.

KCAA director-general Gilbert Kibe however released a statement saying the flight was last spotted at 2:02pm.

He added that it was 40 nautical miles from Nairobi and was flying at 11,000ft above sea level.
