A Senate committee has slapped a Sh200,000 fine on Kwale governor Salim Mvurya for snubbing invitations to appear before it to respond to questions raised by Auditor-General Edward Ouko.

The County Public Accounts and Investments Committee took the drastic decision after Mr Mvurya failed to provide reasons to justify his failure to appear on May 9.

The committee punished the governor despite writing to the clerk on May 4 seeking to the date of appearance.

Committee vice chairperson and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi ruled that Mr Mvurya would have to pay Sh200,000 to the Clerk of the Senate for skipping the hearing.

“We have listened to responses made by Mr Mvurya on his failure to attend the meeting on May 9.

“But the fact that he had refused to honour summonses of June 6, the committee has to act by the power conferred to it by virtue of article 125 of the Constitution,” he said.
