Two palatial homes worth Sh110 million will be constructed for Isiolo governor Mohammed Kuti and the Speaker, budget estimates for the year starting July show.
Isiolo will spend Sh60 million for Dr Kuti’s home, Sh50 million for the Speaker Hussein Halakhe’s residence and Sh300 million for the new county headquarters.
The step look set to spark an uproar amid concerns that counties' development expenditures are diverted to pay for comfort of county officials.
Counties are racing to to build homes for Speakers and governors after the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) gave timelines for allocation of resources. Most counties have set aside between Sh40 million and Sh80 million for the residences.
In 2015, the CRA stopped the construction in a bid to free up money for critical services, advising them to spend on non-core projects from 2018.
Dr Kuti has in 2018/9 given priority to, among others, building Sh300 million headquarters, Sh120 illion market, Sh170 million upgrading of stadium, face-lifting of Isiolo Referral Hospital and Sh300 million completion of abattoir.
