The government has lifted a five-year ban on night fishing in Lamu East over Al-Shabaab terror activates.

Operation Linda Boni director James ole Seriani said fishermen in the county could now go for their fishing expeditions at night.

“The ban has been lifted with effect from today. Fishermen can now go to fish at night without any restrictions provided they follow the law,” he said.

“We shall ensure the sea is safe for fishing. However, we appeal for cooperation from fishermen and the public.”

Areas affected by the ban imposed in 2011 were Kiunga, Ishakani, Mkokoni, Kiwayu and Kizingitini.

The ban followed frequent Al-Shabaab attacks and kidnappings targeting tourists and fishermen.

Areas affected by the ban, which was imposed in 2011, included Kiunga, Ishakani, Mkokoni, Kiwayu and Kizingitini.

This is a relief to the more than 6,000 Lamu fishermen who had been mulling quitting the venture on reduced catch during the day.

However, Lamu fishermen will need a special identity card to enable security monitor their movements while on the Indian Ocean.

Mr Serian said the fishermen will also be required to form beach management units (BMUs) where they will be required to report all their movements.

The BMUs will be required to submit a daily report to the security office on the movements of each fisherman for assessment.
