The Sports ministry has commissioned a feasibility study on plans to set up academies in each of Kenya's 290 constituencies amid growing concerns over their viability.

Sports principal secretary Kirimi Kaberia has said completion of the study will determine the pace of devolving sports and nurturing talent at the grassroots level.

Parliament in June approved a motion by Nominated Member Godfrey Osotsi to establish sports academies in every constituency, raising the number from the 10 regional ones the Ministry had initially proposed. “We are doing feasibility studies to establish their viability in certain areas and to come up with standard architectural designs,” Mr Kaberia told the National Assembly Implementation Committee yesterday.

He said the plan is to cover all the 290 constituencies within the next five to 10 years.
