Teachers will now be compelled to undertake continuous professional development courses, which will earn them a certificate, their employer has said.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chief executive Nancy Macharia said teacher professional development programmes (TPD) will be rolled out starting next month for those in the job market.

“Under this programme all registered teachers will be required to undertake continuous professional development courses to deepen their knowledge in subject of specialisation for enhanced learning outcomes,” said Mrs Macharia.

The programme is financed by the World Bank under the Secondary Education Quality Improvement project at a cost of Sh2.3billion.

“This is a six-year programme covering 17,000 primary schools and 8,500 secondary schools in 30 counties. The objective of the programme is to improve learning outcomes,” said Ms Macharia.

“We want the teaching profession to be at par with other professions. From now a teacher will get a teaching certificate on completion of the training.”
