Tobiko says logging ban to stay for six more months

Timber millers face a long wait after the government extended the ban on logging in all forests by six months.

Environment and Forestry secretary Keriako Tobiko said the extra time would give the State ample time for appointment of a new Kenya Forest Service Board (KFS).

“The six months will also allow the implementation committee to finalise interim reforms and streamline the operation of KFS and management of the forest sector,” said Tobiko.

On February 24, the State imposed a 90-day moratorium on timber harvesting in all public and community forests to allow the re-assessment of the management of the forest sector in the country.

The effects of logging are extensively captured in a report released recently by the Kenya Water Agency, which called for immediate corrective measures.

The report presented to the Mr Tobiko tasked his ministry with speedily coming up with “sufficient policies that will salvage the situation.” Some of the recommendations include developing water towers conservation strategy, fencing them with bamboo and promoting sustainable charcoal production.
