The Treasury has released Sh37 billion to public schools for implementation of the free secondary education programme, a day after the institutions reopened for the first term of 2018.
Public secondary schools have received Sh29.5 billion to cater for the programme, part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2017 election campaign pledges.
The remaining Sh7.5 billion will go towards printing and supplying textbooks for both secondary and primary schools. As part of efforts to implement the project, the government increased funding for secondary boarding schools to Sh22,244 per student.
The government has allocated Sh5,122 per student for tuition and Sh6,000 for the cost of operations. In a statement, the Education ministry said that a portion of the money, equivalent to the cost of six core course books, had been recovered from each learner.
Standard Seven and Eight pupils will each receive four books for English, Kiswahili, Science and Mathematics, while secondary school students will receive six core textbooks for English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
“Schools are expected to acknowledge receipt of the grant by issuing official receipts to the principal secretary for each of the two vote heads,” the ministry said.
