Two thirds of counties are yet to receive a cent from the Treasury in the first two months of the financial year to August, highlighting their struggle in paying workers and ballooning suppliers debt.
The latest Kenya Gazette notice indicates that 32 of the 47 counties had not received a cent of the Sh314 billion they are entitled to as equitable share of national government revenue two months into the new financial year.
The Treasury allocated the remaining 15 counties Sh4.03 billion in the period under review with Mombasa getting the lion’s share of Sh430.7 million, followed by Kiambu’s Sh494.7 million and Migori’s Sh335 million.
Delayed exchequer releases coupled with poor own-revenue collections have seen the devolved units struggle to meet their obligations in good time, leading to an increase in the pending bills.
