  • Turkana Empowerment Advocacy Group wants the government to clarify on the revenue sharing formula which assured the communities of at least 10 per cent of the oil proceeds.

A Turkana lobby has threated to block the transportation of crude from Lokichar to Eldoret set for this month unless sharing of revenue with local communities is clarified.

Turkana Empowerment Advocacy Group has petitioned the government and oil companies to clarify on the revenue sharing formula which assured the communities of at least 10 per cent of the oil proceeds.

The lobby stressed that it will block the road if their concerns are not addressed.

Turkana South MP James Lomenen has amplified the concerns, stating that no oil will leave Lokichar if the Petroleum (Exploration, Development and Production) Bill that President Uhuru Kenyatta returned to the Senate is not passed with community interests as a top priority.

“A specialised truck to be seen at Lokichar transporting oil by road will be a nightmare, it is impossible for now. A law to govern the management of the natural resource is still in the Senate and yet to be finalised,’’ Mr Lomenen said.

He said that the law will guide the Turkana community on the share of the oil cash.

“Lokichar is yet to be served by electricity as was planned, with critical projects under cooperate social responsibility also yet to be completed and more youth still unemployed. There is no need to hurry,” the legislator said.

Kenya plans to move 2,000 barrels of oil from Turkana oil fields to Mombasa port by road daily from next week to test receptiveness in global markets.
