President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised to take action against dumping of waste in lakes and oceans.

Speaking during the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi Monday, President Kenyatta said continued pollution of water masses was adversely affecting fish stocks while exposing Kenyans to toxic substances as well as depleting marine life.

“I pledge to confront head on the challenge of waste management and plastic pollution that is compromising the health of our people and oceans, seas and rivers while threatening food security and the biodiversity on land and at sea,” he said.

Mr Kenyatta’s remarks come 14 months after Kenya banned production of single-use plastic bags and is putting pressure on users of plastic bottles to establish a mechanism to facilitate collection for recycling.

He announced the formation of a committee on the blue economy.

Kenya, he said, will invest in upgrading the Kenya Maritime School to enable it to offer advanced training for seafarers.

President Kenyatta said various programmes were underway to improve livelihoods for coastal communities among them provision of affordable housing.
