Serem, other big names miss the shortlist for PSC top job

Former Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson Sarah Serem is among big names by-passed by a selection panel that has shortlisted 10 applicants to head the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Also by-passed in the race to replace Prof Margaret Kobia, who has since been elevated to become Public Service secretary, are former chairman of the now defunct Transition Authority (TA) Kinuthia Wamwangi and former Education PS Prof George Godia.

Other big names felled in the race that attracted 112 applicants are the 2017 Bungoma governor aspirant Alfred Khangati and Prof Laban Ayiro, who acted as Moi University vice-chancellor for over a year.

Instead, the selection panel has shortlisted only 10 applicants for interview. They include former Egerton University vice-chancellor James Tuitoek and Njoki Kahiga -who briefly acted as the Public Service principal secretary in 2013 before she was nominated as a commissioner in the Kenya Law Review Commission for a five-year-term- are shortlisted for the PSC chairperson post.

Also shortlisted are Jonathan Ltipalei, Rodah Awinja, Stephen Kirogo, Rukia Sheik, Baraka Garise, Juster Nkoroi, Rose Aoko, and Lyn Cherop Mengich.

“Members of the public are invited to submit in writing any credible information of interest relating to any of the shortlisted candidates,” the selection panel said in an advert Wednesday.

The PSC whose new role now includes interviewing principal secretaries before they are nominated by the President, had sought exemption from advertising through the Government Advertising Agency for efficiency and to reach a wider pool of job applicants.

In April, the PSC asked the National Treasury to lift the freeze on recruitment in the public service to enable them to replace the ageing workforce and address the high youth unemployment.

PSC acting chairperson Peter ole Nkuraiya told National Assembly Parliamentary Accounts Committee the freeze is hurting thousands of youths graduating from universities and who cannot be absorbed in the public service despite possessing requisite skills.
