The Tamarind Group opened a new hotel just a few metres from Carnivore. Outside Tamarind Tree Hotel, it looks deceptively unimpressionable, like a grey industrial block. But inside it’s splash of colour, chic, energy and bohemian.
I had a drink at their bar, Dawa Lounge. The bar is lit like a jack-o-lantern, it’s playful and artsy and it seduces you to order another drink.
It was past the happy hour which didn’t matter to me because I was on whisky and nobody has happy hour on whiskies. We are the castaways. If Tamarind Hotel was a person it would be those people who you always see around but who everybody assumes, are dull and boring, until one day you find yourself talking to them and you realise that they are very charming.
Dawa Lounge, on the other hand, is where I’d expect to see people who swim upstream meeting for a drink. It’s got a very ambivalent vibe.
I sat alone at the bar. You know how I know I’m in a nice bar? When I sit down and tell the barman/lady, “can I get a shot of Fernet-Branca?”
If it’s a decent bar they will bring it right away. If it’s mid to low range bar they will look at me like I asked if they sell cows at the back. I didn’t have that problem at this lounge.
