Tycoon whets Josphat’s appetite for golfing

I was somewhat embarrassed as I described my village — only to see that Peter was smiling. He excitedly interjected to inform me, “my wife is from your village” as he proceeded to ask me questions about my family.

The more I told him the more he smiled before he finally said, “my in-laws are your neighbours”.

After that, the game of golf becomes enjoyable as he and I narrated to the rest of our village as well as the problems of the illicit brew. After the game, we sat down to eat some ribs and a beer.

Peter asked me, “young man, you did not tell me what you do!” I told him, “I do a bit of finance and business development for a logistics company.”

I thought that would silence him, but he went on with his inquiry before he said,” give me your card, I will get one of my people to call you.”

I did not expect much from this so imagine my shock when I received a call from a guy named Billy who said, “our chairman said I should call you and see what solutions you have for our company.” I did not want to raise the hopes of anyone, so I decided to only involve Lucy in developing the proposal and presenting to the client.

The more we worked on the project, the more I learnt how loaded the seemingly unkempt Peter is. It turns out, he owns a lot of real estate, some hotels and flower farms.

Two weeks ago, as I was relaxing at home, I received a call from an unknown number.

After a few seconds the caller identified himself, “young man, this is your in-law Peter”.

He said, “I have been looking at your proposals and your numbers and I like what I see, my people will call you to conclude the contract.”

The next few days were a whirlwind of activity between the respective teams of lawyers, but it all ended well with the signing of a contract which will deliver Sh20 million annually.

Since we inked the deal, I have noticed a change in the way the CEO engages me — there is a new respect for me. He seems more interested in my life and he told me, “how do you know this Peter guy? I saw that he is a multi-billionaire.”

I was not aware of how rich Peter is, but I was going to milk this for all it is worth, so I said, “he is my golf buddy. His wife and I come from the same village.” The CEO said, “maybe you should arrange for Peter and me to play some golf together.”

I chuckled and said, “I will see when he is available.” There is no way I am going to allow the CEO to play with Peter — I need to own this relationship and maximise on it.

As if on cue, my phone rang — it was Peter saying, “I am organising a golf tournament to support our local church, can I count on you to take part?” I did not hesitate and said, “but of course.”

I need to polish my golfing skills — looks like it will open many doors for me.
