Every Sunday afternoon, the Kenya Bay Beach hotel hosts a cozy outdoor barbeque at the beach front Frangipani restaurant.

If you know Yul’s restaurant and the IL Covo Mombasa where tourists and locals alike dine and dance, then it is right in between them.

Frangipani comes off as a place to relax with a chilled sundowner cocktail in hand watching holidaymakers jet skiing from the next door Yul’s aquadrom or rolling waves crash onto the beach.

Kenya Bay is a family friendly hotel with a blend of African and modern architecture at the Bamburi beach in Mombasa. It features a spacious dining area and a terrace which opens up to the hotel’s courtyard.

The courtyard is like a meeting point, here tourist, as well as parents with their kids enjoy water polo in the ocean front swimming pool.

There are also those who prefer to get that tanned summer glow on their skin, while others lie under the shade of the large palm trees on the manicured garden.

Occasionally you may also spot beach acrobats contorting their bodies, hoping for a ‘dollar’ from their art.

From the restaurant one also has a view of the beach volleyball court, which is free for guests.

Families pump up the fun by competing in matches against each other.

The game, part of the regularly scheduled programme of activities at the hotel is not only a sport but an experience as the onlookers cheer on. It is a thrill watching the obvious amateur players run, fall and roll on the beach sand. After the sweaty game some take a dip in the ocean.

Back to the main event for the day. At the buffet there was the Indian cuisine with unfamiliar seasoned delicacies boasting an array of flavours.

Their starters are fit for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The standout being the Spicy Maru Bhajia with Tomato Chutney and Vegetable spring rolls
The barbeque serves generous wide variety of grilled meats. The tongue-tingling Spicy Egg Curry with Punjabi Puri is also served.

The dessert options include fruit salads, Punjabi Gajjar Halwa and Caramel mousse.
You can also sip on your favourite soft drink or the famous East African cocktail ‘dawa’ among others.

According to the hotel’s Director Jaswinder Kalsi the Sunday Barbeque and Buffet provides an opportunity for interaction and networking over fine food and soothing sea breeze. It is open to both residents and non-residents with a charge of Sh 1,600 for adults and Sh800 for children. The restaurant is mostly full hence make a reservation.

Mr Kalsi ads that guided snorkelling and boat excursions at the Mombasa Marine park and also visit Haller Park are also available on request. Other activities can include Scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
