What you need to know:

  • At her family business HassConsult, she started as a marketing manager before becoming a project's director.
  • Sakinah never misses lunch at the office that also serves as a get-together session for the family as they talk business.
  • She is single and away from work, she either watches movies or Oprah Winfrey shows or reads inspiration books.

Sakinah Hassanali, the project director at real estate firm HassConsult loves the outdoors; she adores places that are meditative and with a different energy. Ms Hassanali walks around with her passport just in case an opportunity arises for her to visit a new country.

She says she is fascinated with the way people live and practice their spirituality for public good, which has seen her visit 34 countries, touring museums and pre-historic sites, climbing mountains as well as living in villages.

“I have lived soul-searching for the best formula to always add value to others or help them make a profit from implementing my idea. Many people are extractive in nature but hardly give back,” says the Cardiff University-trained economist.

“My father ensured that I am an outward bound person who gets to meet different people from diverse cultures and also to taste first-hand what it takes to enjoy life albeit the harsh realities around one’s surrounding.”

The 34-year-old recalls a visit to the cold Himalayas in Asia where she lived with locals as she climbed the mountain. She later returned to The Himalayas and has also climbed Mount Kenya twice.

“Being alone on a mountain helps me recollect myself and fathom nature as it is without any improvements. It helps me unwind from my daily routine job, plan new projects that can attract investor funds,” she says.

At her family business HassConsult, she started as a marketing manager before becoming a project's director.

“I champion projects where we invite investors to inject funds in single dwelling houses, gated communities to commercial properties,” she says.

She usually starts her day with prayers followed by a 30-minute yoga session or a 15-minute meditation session. She eats healthily and most mornings, she starts with vegetable smoothies which she says is easy to make.

Sakinah never misses lunch at the office that also serves as a get-together session for the family as they talk business.

She is single and away from work, she either watches movies or Oprah Winfrey shows or reads inspiration books. She is currently reading “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle, a book that has helped transform how she relates with the world and people.

She is not a hoarder and after every two years, she disposes off all her clothes and travels to the UK to buy new ones.

“I shop at New Look or Next in UK for all my personal items but I do not wear a watch as I prefer to be light—unnoticeable so to speak,” she says, before adding that she first owned a Peugeot 206 that she kept for years but has since bought a Toyota Kluger.

Her comfort food is mukimo (mashed potatoes blended with vegetables) or sushi. On any day, she would wish to live atop a hill, preferably in Limuru, known for its vast tea bushes and unspoilt greenery.
