PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the publishers of CIO East Africa Wednesday launched the East African edition of the CIO100 Survey 2014, an annual survey that identifies leading companies in the use of and adoption of technology.

Now in its fourth year, CIO100 has become a mark of excellence honouring senior IT executives who have created value for their companies.

“This is the only demand side survey done not just in the region but globally that looks at the use of IT in organisations and honours the people behind the successful implementations,” said Harry Hare, the editorial director of CIO East Africa.

Winners are selected through a three-step process: online application detailing areas of innovation, external judges, led and supported by PwC review the applications, and CIO editors and PwC have final word on the list.

“We are excited to be part of this process and add value to what CIO East Africa has started doing,” said Muchemi Wambugu, a partner at PwC. “We bring in an additional layer of professionalism, quality and experience.”

Winners of this year’s CIO100 will be announced in October and the symposium and award ceremony is planned for November 13-14 in Nairobi. Last year the event was held for the first time in Kigali and attracted more than 300 senior IT and business executives.

In last year’s edition, Wainaina Mwangi emerged the CIO of the year, while Royal Media Services scooped the top award. Kenya’s Judiciary was ranked second.

Traffic fines

Its vast use of video conferencing terminals, digitising its manual records, use of integrated mobile money transfer to ease payment of traffic fines and formulating information and communication policy earned Judiciary the honour.

The use of the Health Information Management System at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital saw the paediatric hospital ranked third.

The system has allowed patient and medical staff to access information through an online platform, and helped Gertrude’s top the health category.

The hospital also uses automated billing and automated updates for bills. Hundreds of CIOs and senior IT executives, technology and business leaders attend the CIO100 symposium.
