The number of companies under the Nairobi Securities Exchange’s pre-listing programme has reached five with more than 10 others having expressed interest to join.

Myspace Properties Limited, a real estate company, is the latest entrant having been admitted on Wednesday into the Ibuka (Swahili for emerging) incubation programme which prepares firms planning to go public and start trading on the Nairobi bourse.

The programme is intended to incubate SMEs with the potential for high growth in the near to medium term who undergo training for between six and 10 months on technical, operational, commercial and strategic aspects of businesses.

NSE Chief Executive Geoffrey Odundo said the admission of a real estate firm into the incubator is a positive step towards achieving the objective of encouraging more firms to go public.

“We are going to give them proper visibility and help them make proper corporate governance structure first for a listed firm. This is very important for us and we wish to encourage similar initiatives by other entrepreneurs,” Mr Odundo said.
