What you need to know:

  • On Tuesday, the price of a 50 kilogramme bag on average declined by six per cent to Sh19,300.
  • The prices have been performing well at the auction and last week hit a high of Sh20,500, supported by good quality coffee in the market.

Coffee prices dropped marginally in Tuesday’s trading reversing the gains witnessed in the previous sales.

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) said the price of a 50 kilogramme bag on average declined by six per cent to Sh19,300. The prices have been performing well at the auction and last week hit a high of Sh20,500, supported by good quality coffee in the market.

The prices had rebounded after a string of poor performances in October as the volume of good quality coffee from eastern Kenya declined.

NCE had anticipated the price of the commodity would rise in the coming weeks as they expected some quality volumes to trickle in from western Kenya.

The auction plans to go on recess starting next week and will be resuming in the New Year according to NCE.

The value of coffee in two months between October and November hit Sh1.6 billion helped by quality volumes of the commodity from western Kenya.

Data from NCE indicates that the value of the produce rose from Sh1.57 billion between October and November last year to Sh1.61 in the review period.

The report shows that volumes for coffees sold through the exchange moved up by 22.62 per cent from 63,891 kilos sold in 2017 to 78,342 this year.
