Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) postponed its weekly Tuesday trading following plans by opposition NASA to ‘swear in’ Raila Odinga as people’s president in the city on Tuesday.

NCE said the political move was likely to disrupt smooth flow of the auction, hence the need to postpone it to Wednesday.

The government had warned that the opposition would not be allowed to use Uhuru Park to host the event, while NASA insisted the event would take place at the venue. This was seen as likely to cause running battles between the police and the coalition’s supporters in the city.

“Due to the security uncertainty tomorrow, (Tuesday) kindly be advised that we have found it prudent to postpone the auction to Wednesday, January 31, 2018,” said Daniel Mbithi, chief executive officer at NCE.

Kenyan coffee has been performing well in the recent auctions.
