Canadian Simba Essel Energy is seeking approval to start an oil drilling programme in Wajir, northern Kenya, whose preliminary evaluation last year put the site’s potential at over 400 million barrels.

The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE)-listed exploration firm said its Dubai-based subsidiary Essel Group Middle East (EGME), which manages its exploration activities in Kenya, had completed “reviewing and analysing data” obtained from three independent international resource consulting firms.

The trio are Sproule International, CGG GeoConsulting and XODUS whose data will be crucial for the drilling.

“The EGME technical team has reviewed all data pertaining to the interpretation and has comprised a drill programme which will be submitted to the Ministry of Energy in Kenya. This will be followed up with a technical presentation to the Ministry as part of their application to obtain a formal permit to drill,” said the regulatory filings.

“EGME is also in advanced negotiations with a major drilling company regarding a drill program for Block 2A in Kenya. Once finalised, this drilling agreement will be submitted to the Ministry of Energy in Kenya for approval and issuance of a permit for drilling purposes.”

Simba last year had said its consultant Sproule International had completed an assessment report of block 2A, identifying 29 leads ahead of exploratory drilling.

“In total, Sproule puts the gross unrisked undiscovered petroleum initially in-place at 437.7 MM boe (million barrels of oil or equivalent),” Simba had said.
