Karen-based Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) has placed its three-floor Kisumu campus property on sale, a month after it halted business to reduce expenses.

In a notice placed in the dailies on Thursday, the university said it planned to sell the building together with the 0.1055 hectare of land it stands on on Ogada Street and adjacent to the busy Paul Mboya Street in Kisumu.

The property houses classrooms, halls and offices that were used by CUEA for its degree, diploma and certificate programmes. CUEA officials in Kisumu campus said no reserve price had been placed on the property.

Last October, CUEA’s vice chancellor Justus Gitari Mbae described the Kisumu and Nairobi campuses’ closure as a turnaround strategy aimed at enhancing prudent use of their resources.

“This decision (closure) has been arrived at after careful consideration of the effect it will have on students, staff and all those concerned. All necessary arrangements have been taken to ensure smooth transition for students at the affected campuses,” he said.

The move came as the Commission for University Education (CUE) gave CUEA, Presbyterian and Kenya Methodist universities a year to put their houses in order ahead of a planned sustainability audit this year.

CUE’s report handed to Education Minister Fred Matiang’i indicated the universities must prepare a report on their financial position, sustainability and adherence to statutory requirements.
