Naivasha’s fast-growing hospitality industry has received a major boost following the opening of a Sh1 billion hotel.

Hospitality chain Superior Hotels Limited has opened its third hotel in the lakeside town in an expansion that has brought its hotel units to six.

Lake Naivasha Resort opened its doors this month after a dry run starting September.

It will be the chain’s signature hotel in the town.

The firm owns Sweet Lake Resort and Masada Hotel in Naivasha.

Superior Hotels also recently acquired West Wood Hotel in Westlands Nairobi, which it wants to turn around. It also owns Pearl Palace and Hadassa in Nairobi.

Superior Hotels started off a decade ago along Murang’a Road in Nairobi.

The latest resort located along Naivasha Moi South Road is styled as a conference-cum-holiday destination.

It is spread over 25 acres with access to Lake Naivasha. It has 96 rooms organised in luxurious cottages, 16 conference rooms, a business centre plus an amphitheatre that can sit 1,200 people.

“The heavy level of investment in the resort is to make it ideal for the modern day conference goer. It is no longer about just providing meeting rooms,” said Lake Naivasha Resort general manager Timothy Njaga in a statement.

“We have started bidding for not only local but international conferences as well.”

The announcement follows a string of heavy investments by leading luxury hotels in Kenya last year, including Accor Hotels, Hilton, Carlson Rezidor, and Acacia Premier.

Nineteen hotels are expected to come to Kenya shortly, with a total of 3,453 new rooms in the pipeline, according to a report by Lagos-based consultancy W-Hospitality Group.

The lakeside town of Naivasha has become attractive to companies and parastatals who want their employees to hold out-of-office meetings, emerging as a preferred destination for meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions tourism.

Moi South Lake Road itself has become a hospitality industry hotspot featuring, among others, Enashipai Resort, Sawela, Sopa and Simba lodges, Crayfish Camp and Lake Naivasha Country Club.
