Local start-ups miss Ecobank fintech award

Kenyan financial technology (fintech) start-ups missed out on the winners list of this year’s Ecobank Fintech Challenge won by a Tanzanian firm.

South Africa’s Virtual Identity and Wallet.ng from Nigeria were the first and second runners up.

They won cash prizes of $10,000 (Sh1 million), $7,000 (Sh700,000) and $5,000 (Sh500,000) respectively.

Eleven start-ups had been shortlisted. They included Lypa (Kenya), Litee (Benin), SESO Global (South Africa), Invested (Sierra Leone), Eversend (France), Secapay (Nigeria), MojiPay (Togo), and Awamo (Germany).

“We are proud of the impressive start-ups that made it to our 2018 final. They are shining examples of the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity,” said Ecobank Group chief executive Ade Ayeyemi.
