Runda residents are Thursday set to present views to the environmental agency on the planned Sh1 billion high-end hotel by Foreign Affairs secretary Amina Mohamed’s brother, Ahmed Jibril.

National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) said interested residents or groups should attend the public hearing at the 8.4 acre project site within Runda Close, which is part of the Runda gated community.

The renewed push by the investor follows conclusion of a court case that allowed construction subject to Nema approval that will ensure concerns raised by Runda Gated Community Association are addressed.

Residents had opposed the amalgamation of 15 plots bought by the developer saying the area was reserved for controlled development of residential houses.

“The amalgamation and change of user is against zoning restrictions and is in breach of other applicable special conditions regulating the parent grant of Runda Estate,” association chairman Isaac Gitoho said in a protest letter to Nairobi county government.

That did not deter Mr Jibril from successfully acquiring a change-of-user licence from county government.

Mr Jibril strongly refuted the residents’ fears, saying he meant well and would not do anything to disrupt their peaceful, serene and quiet environment.
