Listed hospitality group TPS Serena #ticker:TPSE will replace its petrol-based generators with solar power across all their Africa units.

Serena Hotels Group engineer Abdulkadir Rahim said the decision was reached after a year-long review of Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge’s Sh100 million solar investment. The renewable energy source powers the entire operation.

“We have also recently installed a solar power plant at the Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge and are committed to replicating this model at the other Serena Hotels properties in Africa,” he said, adding that cost details were still being worked on.

Mr Rahim spoke after the Kilaguni property won the global Extraordinary Business Case and CSR Special Award in Milan, Italy at the just-concluded Global Best Practice Awards, 2018.

Serena Hotels runs 24 upmarket hotels, safari lodges, camps and resorts within six countries- Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda and Mozambique.

Judges hailed Serena’s use of solar power in meeting energy needs from lighting, laundry services and kitchen operations as well as investing in a wastewater treatment and recycling plant at the facility.
