A total of 12,080 teachers have submitted their details to Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) asking for promotions from their employer – the Teachers Service Commission after attaining higher academic qualifications.

Data compiled by Knut indicate that 257 teachers with Master’s degree, 6370 (undergraduate) degrees and 5453 (diplomas) have put in their applications.

Knut and the employer- Teachers Service Commission (TSC)- are currently engaged in a battle over the promotions and the matter is before a conciliation committee chaired by Mr Charles Maranga who is today (Wednesday) expected to present a report to Labour Court.

The conciliator was appointed to avert a teacher’s strike called by Knut over promotion, transfers, performance appraisals among other grievances.

Knut's Nakuru branch has the highest number of teachers seeking promotions at 401 followed by Kitui and Kibwezi(both 382), Mumias (338), Bungoma North (312), Butere (242) among others.

Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion said there are more than 30,000 teachers who have attained higher qualification since 2014 but most are yet to receive acknowledgment letters from the TSC to enable them seek promotion.
