What you need to know:

  • Isiolo, Uasin Gishu join push for welfare even as CoG starts issuing warning letters with eyes on stopping salaries of 7,000.
  • This brings to a total of 18 counties that are participating in the strike that was suspended on February 5 by the Labour Court in favour of mediation.

More than 7,000 nurses in public health facilities risk having their salaries withheld and employment terminated even as Isiolo and Uasin Gishu counties joined the ongoing strike.

This brings to a total of 18 counties that are participating in the strike that was suspended on February 5 by the Labour Court in favour of mediation.

The Council of Governors (CoG) said it has already issued Show-Cause letters to 250 nurses in Marsabit County while the rest of the striking nurses will be served on Monday followed by salaries stoppage.

In an updated status of the strike in various counties CoG says 7,447 nurses went on strike against a total of 8,146.

The list does not include Isiolo which is expected to join the strike today and Usain Gishu nurses who commenced their strike yesterday.

It, however, includes the Pumwani hospital in Nairobi County where 45 nurses who are affiliated to the County Workers Union are still on strike while acknowledging that the 97 nurses belonging to the Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) have reported to work.

Nurses in Embu, 638, and Kisii’s 827 have since gone back to work while only one of the 406 nurses in Elgeyo Marakwet is participating in the strike, the report reveals.

Homa Bay County had only one nurse report to work from the total of 872 nurses.

On Monday Knun secretary-general Seth Panyako, his deputy Maurice Opetu, interim chairman John Gwasi and assistant general secretary Asha Ali Ido were ordered to appear before the court on February 26.

The court said that the union leaders ought to show cause why they should not be punished for contempt.

It further warned the union leaders against supporting the strike which was suspended on February 5 in favour of mediation.

Governors had moved to court on Monday seeking to have the nurses’ union leaders committed to civil jail for six months.

Knun is demanding that each nurse be paid Sh5,000 annual uniform allowance and an increase in their risk perks by Sh3,000 to Sh23,000.

The union has accused the government of reneging on a last November deal which helped end a five-month strike.
