Mining Cabinet Secretary Dan Kazungu has appointed a board to oversee the issuance of mining licences, ending months of speculation and renewing hopes of clearing hundreds of applications piled at the ministry.

The nine-member Mineral Rights Board is mandated to declare certain minerals as strategic. It will also have the power to stop, suspend or curtail production by licensed firms.

The team, whose tenure extends to three years, will also determine fees, charges and royalties payable for a mineral right and advise on areas suitable for small-scale and artisanal mining, among other duties.

“Today’s inauguration of the Mineral Rights Board is the epitome of our reform agenda for the mining sector,” said Mr Kazungu.

Abel Chumba will chair the board expected to cut down cumbersome bureaucratic processes which investors applying for licences to prospect for various minerals face.

Other members of the MRB include PSs Ibrahim Mohamed (Mining) and Kamau Thugge (Treasury) as well as the National Land Commission chairman Mohamed Swazuri.

The rest are director of mines Raymond Mutiso, geological services director Shadrack Kimomo, Council of Governors representative Wachira Maina and two mining experts Vivienne Apopo and Gachuru Mburu.
