Nakuru county has hired a consultancy firm to conduct feasibility study on the Gioto dump site maintenance project in a move set to open it up for private investment.

Nakuru county director of environment Kiogora Mureithi said Mott MacDonald, a US consultancy firm, will have to conclude technical, legal, environment, economic analysis of the site before it is approved for any investment.

“This was after we did a successful proposal on waste management which was approved by the public-private partnership unit of the national Treasury and the World Bank which then contracted the company,” he said.

Earlier, Water, Environment and natural resources executive Richard Rop had indicated that some investors had pulled out of the recycling project.

On Thursday, Mr Kiogiora said the slow progress on the ground was a result of pending study.

The dumping site has been cited as posing a health hazard to the people living around it and motorists.

It has been in use since 1974 and the previous regimes including the defunct municipal council grappled with the challenge of acquiring a suitable land for its relocation.

Mr Kiogiora noted that the study, meant to take 20 weeks, started in early February. “Any interested partners at the moment will have to wait for the findings of the report before any approval to invest on the dumping site,” he said.
