The Kenya Red Cross will today launch another drought appeal to Kenyans after raising the amount required to help manage the crisis by Sh1.5 billion.

The Kenyan chapter of the humanitarian organisation is now appealing to the public to help it raise Sh2.5 billion, two months after the government declared the current drought a national disaster.

In January, it was aiming to raise Sh1 billion but with the persistent weather conditions they have decided to up the amount.

The money is meant to deal with the increasing number of people in need of food assistance that has reached more than 3 million.

“The number of those affected by the drought continues to rise at an alarming rate with no signs of slowing down. At the moment, more than 3 million people are facing starvation, over double the number recorded in December 2016. In response, KRCS has announced a dramatic revision to its emergency relief efforts to target 1 million people, an operation that now requires Sh2.5 billion," read a media advisory.

The charity has also warned that if the drought crisis continues to escalate , this figure could climb to 4 million people in the coming weeks.

Malnutrition rates among children are steadily climbing with recent surveys showing that there are more than 340,000 children under the age of five that are acutely malnourished and in need of immediate support.
