  • Official says families affected by the heavy downpour have been issued with non-food items including kitchen kits, soaps and mosquito nets.

The Kenya Red Cross Society's Central Region Manager Gitonga Mugambi says the aid agency is cash-strapped despite growing need to help mitigate effects of floods.

Mr Mugambi said the organisation has been unable to offer help to disaster victims in Nyeri after the county government withdrew its financial support.

“We had a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2014 with the county government that we would be responding on their behalf to disaster issues. They gave us Sh15 million in that year but we have no money left,” said Mr Mugambi.

He said the devolved government had not given any more funds since then.

Finance executive Charles Githinji admitted there was partnership but said "he would not engage in the matter now".

“If we breached the contract they would have gone to court of law,” said Mr Githinji while avoiding discussing the issue.

Mr Mugambi explained that the Sh15 million was used on risk reduction exercise by training community groups and government staff on disaster management.

The money was also used in buying household items and iron sheets to families affected by incidents of fire and other calamities.

He added that Red Cross has assisted 35 counties in the country to develop a disaster policy while others are awaiting approval by their respective county assemblies.

Imminent danger

The regional boss further said that the organisation has formed a team of 30 members of Disaster Response Unit in each county within the region to monitor and assess the situation.

He singled out Meru, Kirinyaga and Murang’a counties as areas with imminent dangers of flooding and landslides.

Mr Mugambi said tens of families affected by the heavy downpour have been issued with non-food items including kitchen kits, soaps, mosquito nets, make shift tents, blankets and water jerricans.

He said the affected families living in steep areas have already been instructed to relocate to safer grounds as the rains continue.

“We are advising the affected families to relocate. Some are adamant but they are risking their lives,” said Mr Mugambi.
