What you need to know:

  • Kenya Railways had earlier today halted the train services indefinitely, citing the current political climate.
  • The State agency now says it has reviewed its decision and will continue operating the trains between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Less than two hours after stating that Madaraka Express trains would be suspended until further notice, the Kenya Railways Corporation has sent out another statement to newsrooms retracting the move.

The earlier statement had cited the current political climate and security concerns for passengers as the reason for the indefinite suspension.

"Following a security meeting and review, Kenya Railways will resume all services on both the Madaraka Express and the Nairobi commuter rail service," the State agency said Wednesday.

The suspension would have affected passengers planning to travel to the coastal city of Mombasa from Nairobi and back.

The locomotive, which makes about Sh3 million a day between the two cities, had initially halted its operations to allow its staff to vote yesterday.

This was the first scheduled interruption of the transport service since its launch by President Uhuru Kenyatta in June.

The service has been a major boost to the tourism industry with hotel bookings rising as a result of local and foreign visitor inflows.

Hiccups

This is not the first time Madaraka Express train has faced operational challenges.

Last week, pay for workers hired by China Road and Bridge Cooperation (CRBC) to operate the Nairobi-Mombasa line was delayed threatening smooth operations of the train.

Staff who have been working without contracts since April protested at CRBC's offices in Syokimau and threatened to down tools over delayed July salaries.

The Chinese firm, however, blamed the situation on the refurbishment of its salary payment system, saying it was reviewing bank account details of staff hired in June and July.
