The American Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert, warning its citizens in four Kenyan towns to be vigilant.

The embassy said that westerners might be targeted for attack by extremists in Nairobi, Naivasha, Nanyuki, and coastal areas of Kenya.

The announcement comes just a fortnight after an attack that claimed 21 lives at the dusitD2 complex on 14 Riverside Drive.

“Credible information indicates Westerners may be targeted by extremists in Nairobi, Naivasha, Nanyuki, and coastal areas of Kenya,” said the embassy on its website.

Heightened vigilance

“The US Embassy reminds the public of the continued need for heightened vigilance throughout Kenya, especially in public spaces such as shopping malls, hotels, and places of worship,” it added.

The embassy has urged its citizens traveling to or residing in Nairobi enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

STEP enrollment, says the embassy, gives their citizens latest security updates, and makes it easier for the US embassy or nearest US consulate to contact them in an emergency.

“If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest US embassy or consulate,” the embassy said.
