The county government of Nairobi has closed down Uhuru Park from the public with immediate effect.

According to a notice published in the local dailies on Wednesday, the county said the popular park in the city centre will undergo improvements to enhance its usefulness.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance usefulness to its visitors.

“Consequently, the facility has been closed down to the public for any gatherings and meetings with effect from January 23, 2018 until further notice,” read in part the notice by Acting County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.

Already booked

The closure of the facility comes just days after the same ground had been booked by a group calling itself Nairobi Business Community ostensibly to carry out cultural rites on January 30, 2018.

The group’s chair Wilfred Kamau even told the media they had been given a go-ahead by the City Hall to hold their event at the venue and toured the park on Wednesday.

It is on the same venue where opposition Nasa coalition had initially planned to swear in their leaders – Raila Odinga and his deputy Kalonzo Musyoka - on January 30.
