Each household is set to receive Sh2,300 a month for purchase of food this month and June disbursed through Action Aid.

The programme would benefit 54,613 individuals affected by the drought.

Some 9,000 hunger-stricken families in Laikipia County will benefit from Sh40 million cash support programme by World Food Programme and the national government.

Each household is set to receive Sh2,300 a month for purchase of food this month and June disbursed through Action Aid.

“The vulnerable families have already been identified at the community level and cash transfer will commence this week where family heads will receive the money through their mobile phones,” said county drought management coordinator Henry Mustafa.

He said the programme would benefit 54,613 individuals affected by the drought.

“We have calculated that each family has at least six members who stand to benefit from this programme. The cash disbursement takes place in May and June but could be extended depending on the situation on the ground,” said the official.

He said most of the areas are receiving depressed rainfall and farm harvests are expected to be low and most of the households will require food aid.

Livestock are yet to recover from the effects of drought despite the rains currently being experienced.
