The controversial Meru County Hotel established by former governor Peter Munya will be converted into county government offices, Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi has announced.

The governor said the agreement was reached after consultations with Meru County Investment and Development Corporation, which was overseeing the hotel’s refurbishment.

The hotel, which is situated in Meru town, was former governor Peter Munya’s project and was being refurbished at a cost of Sh184 million.

“As the government, we decided to convert this into county offices because even the senior officers including the county executives and the chief officers are not well accommodated and they do not have a good working environment,” said the former Meru senator.

The county boss said the idea of the government running a hotel in Meru was not viable since the county has many hotels.

“There is no need to compete with the private sector, we have many good hotels here in Meru. Instead we should create a good working environment for the county government officers,“ he said.

The governor, who addressed the media after inspecting the facility, was accompanied by other top officials, including his deputy, Titus Ntuchiu and chief of staff Gideon Kimathi.
