Mombasa businesses thrive ahead of Idd-ul-Fitr holiday on Saturday

Shopping centres and the ancient Mackinnon Market in Mombasa witnessed a hive of activities as Muslim faithful bought foodstuffs, clothes and shoes in readiness for Idd-ul-Fitr celebrations.

Business in Kibokoni was booming as locals trooped in to buy goods in preparation for the end of Ramadhan.

The central business district around Mwembe Tayari was also packed with Muslims and other locals as they scrambled for goods ahead of the fete.

At the busy Mackinnon Market, hundreds of shoppers jammed there to mainly buy clothes.

“We are glad we managed to start the month well and now all is well as we prepare for the celebrations,” said Aisha Suleiman, a shopper.

Muslims around the world will observe Idd-ul-Fitr festival on Friday and Saturday mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, in a gazette notice on Tuesday, declared Friday a public holiday.

“In exercise of powers conferred by Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, Friday, the June 15, 2018, shall be a public holiday in order to accord all Kenyans and persons who profess the Islamic faith the opportunity to make preparations to mark Idd-ul-Fitr on Saturday, June 16, 2018,” said Mr Matiang’i in a statement.

Several mosques in Mombasa were being painted yesterday ahead of the Saturday celebrations.

Idd-ul-Fitr is the time for Muslim to celebrate their dedication throughout the 29-30 days of fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan.
