The Sh80 billion Likoni bridge that will link Mombasa Island to South Coast will soon be a reality following the completion of its preliminary design.
Japan consultancy firm, Katahira & Engineers International, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) last week presented the final preliminary design to the project stakeholders in Mombasa.
The government, which is the main stakeholder through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and Mombasa county government officials, approved the design.
The documentations of the plan are however yet to be officially sent to KeNHA for approval which will give a go-ahead for the beginning of meetings on detailed design stage.
“What was done was the presentation of the feasibility study which is now completed after taking three years.
The official approval of the first design will then allow us to start planning for meetings of the detailed design of the bridge,” said Mr Horward M'Mayi, KeNHA engineer in charge of the project.
In attendance from the county government was the Transport executive Taufiq Balala.
Other stakeholders were officials from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya Defence Forces and National Museums of Kenya.
Mombasa county department of Infrastructure and Public Works said on its official Facebook account: “Attendants gave great contributions and in the end gave approval for the project to proceed to the detailed design stage.”
The detailed designed will, however, take the government and its consultant two years to complete, according to Mr M’Mayi.
